Reviews

Yet again, the PlayStation 2 era beckons me to rip out my heart and leave me searching somewhere in the early years of the new millennium for an answer to the question: “What happened to video games?” Burnout 3: Takedown is wholly fun to play and offers a great balance between challenge and accomplishment. It refrains from artificial restriction in favor of creating great moments for the player. As I returned to this game, I remembered how many hours were spent with friends playing Crash Mode to edge just a little higher on the leaderboard. I longed for the reward of nearly missing an oncoming car from the opposite lane of traffic.

Criterion’s work on Burnout 3 remains one of the best achievements of the PlayStation 2 era and a true pinnacle of arcade racing. I wish we had more PS2 games to play.

“Listen up Crash FM listeners! The roads are paved, the traffic is heavy and the air smells like sweet sweet gasoline from the destruction y’all are causing! Speeds have been so fast, we’re breaking the sound barrier out there today. Keep an eye for those diabolically tasty crash junctions as well. I want to see absolute carnage all throughout the day. Remember to keep that sunscreen on because it is Burnout hot out there. This is Stryker signing off until your favorite part of the next song.” – Stryker, Crash FM Host
