Super Mario Kart is twenty-five years old. To celebrate its quarter-century of existence, Joe finally learns how to play it properly.

Listen in on the ramblings of someone who never had a Super Nintendo and isn’t particularly great at this version. I spend the better part of an hour working my way through the game’s three circuits and talking about the series’ history. In coincidence with this month’s cover story, I talk about how Super Mario Kart is the first important crossover in Nintendo’s history that led to later franchises.

I recant my time trying to find a tiny Nintendo Entertainment System and lament my chances at obtaining its successor when it launches this fall. Then, as I slowly get better at the game, I talk about where I wish Nintendo’s preservation efforts would reach.
