To celebrate Science Fiction month on The Free Cheese, we wanted to pick a truly great game in the genre. There are so many games to choose from that it was hard to narrow it down to one. I’m so excited to announce that this month for The Free Cheese Game Club we will be playing Axiom Verge.
Axiom Verge is developed by Tom Happ. As the sole developer for the game, it took Happ the better part of a decade to bring his dream to life, working on Axiom Verge in his spare time. Axiom Verge largely resembles the Metroid series, and clearly draws inspiration from Nintendo’s exploration-based sci-fi title.
What I learned through playing Axiom Verge, is that while it resembles Metroid, it does a lot that Metroid doesn’t and a lot that maybe Metroid can’t. There are new weapons and abilities that change the way a game like this is played. There is a glitch mechanic that the player utilizes throughout the game to access new areas or defeat enemies.
The mechanic is derived from the experience of playing games on the NES, where a certain glitch might occur if the game exceeded the console’s RAM, allowing players to walk through walls or change the way the character interacted with the world.
In the days of the NES, a glitch like this would only last a short while, as it would typically crash the system when it didn’t know what to display. Here, Axiom Verge uses it throughout the game, in addition to a number of other weapons and abilities.
What’s most impressive about the game is that it was developed solely by one man. From beginning to end, every pixel, every sound- all done by Tom Happ. Additionally, it really is a great game. More than just a Metroid clone as it would seem at first glance, Axiom Verge is one of the best games of 2015 and I hope you’ll join us this month in playing it.
