When Bloodborne was first announced, I was immediately excited to play it. However, my knowledge of the Souls series from director Hidetaka Miyazaki left me in fear that I wouldn’t be able to properly enjoy the game.

Upon its release, I grabbed a copy of the game and ventured forth. I spent three hours in the opening section, never understanding how to acquire a weapon and trying to fight every enemy in my path with my fists. There wasn’t much in the way of a guide to look to on that first day, so I had to rely on the advice of friends.

For those looking to start Bloodborne, whether joining us for October’s Game Club or gearing up for the release of The Old Hunter’s expansion coming in November, I wanted to provide a bit of a beginner’s guide to the game.

I’m going to break this up into sections, so if you’d prefer to jump around, click on the appropriate section below. We’ll start with the basics. The first section is really what you should do before turning on your PS4. It sounds silly, but I wish I had done this before diving in. Second, I’ll detail a bit of what to expect as you begin to wander in Yharnam and suggest some best practices that can be applied from start to finish of your adventure. Finally, I’ll go into the first boss battle and some general suggestions for taking it down.

  1. Introduction
  2. Getting Started
  3. The Hunt Begins
  4. Your First Boss Battle (Coming Soon!)

If you have any suggestions or tips of your own, be sure to leave them in the comments section below.
